weekend home style: curio collections

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating 'dust collections' as my mom and I refer to random collections of objects whose only purpose (besides being pretty) is to collect dust...
BUT isn't this collection of violet glassware beautiful in the sunlight?

iTamp

so everyone was talking about the iPad yesterday. But they were not saying how they were going to run out and be the first ones to get one. Conversations went more like this:

Me: Guess what my friend said when he heard about the iPad.
David: What?
Me: So, how often will I have to change mine?
David: hahahahahahahhaahah

David: Someone needs to talk to the apple guys and get them to be honest and just call it an iTampon

Peter: You can't even make calls from it!

Yes. Now men of the world can unite and make fun of apple for their name sillyness.
Or maybe apple was ingenious in choosing the name iPad, knew how trends come and go, are already planning an awesome replacement that combines the iPhone and iPad, and you WILL have to replace them after your monthly cycle?
Only time will tell...

last weekend, walks and huevos

Last Saturday we went for a walk down to the Natural History Museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit and then to go to the V&A to see the Met Police's exhibit on fakes and forgeries they had acquired. For a change of pace we decided to walk there by taking all the roads we had never taken. Surprisingly, it was difficult at times to find new roads! But it was very fun to find new connections. More than a few times we shouted with glee when we discovered new connections to old paths.

At one point Ste jumped to look over a wall and besides seeing the railway tracks, he discovered the most beautiful green moss on the top of the wall.

Can you spot the bunny of the week? ;)

And we discovered some funny signs along the way... I'm sure everyone has felt like putting a sign like this up at least once.

Some of the expensive houses had beautiful mosaics leading to their doors.

One of my favorite photos from the exhibit was Springtail on a Snowflake.

And then Sunday we treated ourselves to an improvisation of huevos rancheros :)

weekend home style: hobbit house

Your eyes are not deceiving you, and no, this is not the set of Bilbo Baggins' house from the Lord of the Rings....

This is the real home of a family of 4 in Wales, built by the father, father-in-law, and other passers-by! You can read about the building of it here. My favorite part is the 'reciprocal roof' - that spiral roof structure below creating a natural skylight.

What a cool home to grow up in! I bet bedtime stories are even better in this house :)

tuesday inspiration: staying warm in winter

January always makes me think of only two things:
How do people look stylish and warm?
and
Will there be more snow?! (that was excitement...)

Well, over the months I have found a good number of contenders for stylish and warm.

I like the white furry stripe and matching boots/scarf

I think it's the beard and hat

Models, blonde, and cozy

And the 'throw-everything-on-in-my-closet' look.

Yes, staying warm and stylish isn't easy.

Now, let's see if it actually snows on Wednesday...

weekend home style: swedish winter

so I think these images of a red Swedish house are a bit belated (note the small Christmas tree in photo 5), but I did not want to hold on to them for another 12 months, so I figure, hey, Christmas was less than a month ago, so this house will do quite nicely...

I love all the simple details. It feels just like a home out of Carl Larsson :)

Games night tonight with Vicks, Matt, Sam, and Becks. Supposedly Vicks has a new boardgame based on Shaun the Sheep from Wallace and Gromit...

morning surprise

The view this morning. If you look closely you might see that it is flurrying as we speak!

I will always find weather forecasting amusing. It seems to me that it is really all a big show, weather forecasters don't really have the ability to predict weather all that well- and especially in regards to snow. Just look at the 5 day forecast and watch it change daily or even hourly at times. Folks, that's not forecasting, that's looking out the window and telling us what's going on...

more weather

SJ just showed me this photo of Britain on the BBC illustrating the hold that Jack Frost has over the country right now.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

ginger-bread

one of my favorite parts of this Christmas-
constructing the incredibly colorful, incredibly crowded, incredibly unstable gingerbread farmyard :)

new year!

We're finally back in London after all our travels. We got back to London originally on the 31st of December but only stayed for New Years (met VB and ML and watched the fireworks from Hampstead Heath and had a Elijah Wood sighting), then immediately left on Jan 1 to go up to Manchester to visit SJ's parents. Phew.

We came back earlier than we planned today on the train because we got about 3 inches of snow overnight in Manchester AND the forecast for the next 5 days in London looks VERY snowy too (see below).

Should be an interesting week for us!
