spring is springing

We saw the first snowdrops of spring on Sunday.
And I noticed last night that it's still a tiny bit light outside at 6pm.
And there are songbirds singing in the twilight as well.
I know everyone back home is getting pummeled by more snow, but I can't help but think that spring must be getting close...

banana muesli bread

We made this on Saturday.
All traces were gone by Sunday evening.
Very moreish as the Brits would say.

Banana Muesli Bread

generous 3 cups whole-wheat flour
2 teaspoon salt
1/2 oz yeast
1/2 stick softened butter
generous 1/4 cup water
2 large bananas, chopped
1 bowl muesli

Makes 2 loaves

Put the flour, salt, yeast, and butter into a bowl. Slowly add water to the bowl and mix carefully by hand until the dough becomes elastic. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, then cover the bowl and set aside to rest for 2 hours.

Divide the dough into two, then add a chopped banana to each, using your hands to "mash" the banana into the mixture. Your dough will now be sticky, so add enough muesli to each to regain the original texture.

Line a baking sheet. Roll each dough into a ball, then press into the bowl of muesli, so that the dough becomes completely coated. Place the loaves on the baking sheet and let rise for 1-2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 400F/200C. Using a knife, deeply score the top of each ball into 8 sections. Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

1968

We got emailed this photo today of the shop back in 1968.
Groovy huh?

Back then the shop was where the Beatles got their uniforms for the Sgt. Pepper's album photo! You can see some of the clothes hung around the windows.

Not too much has changed since then! Though I think we may copy the past and get a nice big 84 above the door, along with our website of course :)

valentines

our Valentine's Day was spent mainly in the dark- literally, not figuratively.

We lost power Saturday night around 6pm and didn't receive full power back until 11:40pm Sunday night. We dubbed this our 'adventure' and layered up to stay warm without heat or hot water. Luckily, our stove is gas powered so we could still cook food by candlelight :)

Valentine's Crumpet

We spent most of the day on the phone trying to get edf to get our electricity fixed, but we did still go to the farmer's market and do some nice cooking.

We had a bunch of candles that followed us wherever we went from room to room.
Thankfully, when the power finally got fixed it's stayed fix (touch wood)...

ribbon

And from beneath the covers came a voice when I peeked back into the bedroom this morning.

"I found your ribbon"

yes, this is love.

palindrome day

I know this day has already happened in the US, but as I am in England and they write dates in a silly backwards way and insist that this is the correct format, Happy Palindrome Day!

01/02/2010

(to Americans this was on January 2nd, but Brits read this as February 1st, oh well!)

I thought this confused tiger bunny was suitable for this confusing palindrome day.
